Crowns

Dental crowns are some of the most versatile tools in dentistry. We can use dental crowns to fix broken teeth, adjust misshapen teeth, or replace missing teeth altogether. They are beautiful, sturdy appliances that blend in perfectly with your natural teeth. No matter what dental need you may have, our team at Semans Family Dentistry can craft the perfect crown for your smile!

What Are Dental Crowns for?

Unfortunately, teeth cannot repair themselves after being injured. Depending on how severe the damage is, we may need to install a dental crown to restore a tooth’s strength and functionality. We use dental crowns to treat a variety of dental issues, such as:

  • Missing teeth
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • Severely misshapen teeth
  • Teeth with significant cosmetic blemishes
  • Teeth with large dental fillings
  • Excessively worn teeth
  • Teeth that appear too small

What is the Procedure?

Your appointment will begin with a consultation with Dr. Semans. He will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and oral structures before moving forward with a recommendation.

Once you have both decided that installing a dental crown is the best course of action, Dr. Semans will take a detailed impression of your teeth. He will send this impression to a professional dental laboratory where skilled technicians will begin crafting your new crown. Dr. Semans will provide you with a temporary crown to wear while you wait.

Your new crown will be ready within two to three weeks. During your follow-up appointment, Dr. Semans will begin by preparing your tooth. To do this, he will remove any excess enamel and shape the bone before permanently attaching the crown. After a few adjustments to ensure the crown fits comfortably and securely, you will be able to enjoy your new restoration.

How Do I Care for My Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are designed to last a lifetime. However, like natural teeth, they need care and attention to ensure they remain in good shape. Continue brushing and flossing daily with a soft-bristled brush and fluoridated toothpaste. Do not eat any hard foods, such as popcorn, olive pits, or ice. It is also important to avoid chewing on hard objects with your crown or using it as a tool to open things.

If your crown becomes damaged, falls off, or feels unnatural, please call us right away. Dr. Semans and our skilled team will be happy to adjust your crown, reattach it, or install a new one, if necessary.
