Teeth Whitening

Nothing portrays confidence and youth more than a bright smile. Unfortunately, everyone’s teeth become stained over time. At Semans Family Dentistry, we want all our patients to have a smile that makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. That is why we are proud to offer advanced in-office and at-home whitening treatments.

What Causes Teeth to Stain?

Everyone’s teeth are prone to staining – some more than others. A variety of things cause teeth to stain, such as certain foods, drinks, and medications. Poor hygiene and genetics can also play a role in causing teeth to darken. Thankfully, we can eliminate most surface stains!

Causes of teeth stains include:

  • Dark-colored or dyed foods and drinks
  • Coffees, teas, and wines
  • Tobacco
  • Certain medications
  • Poor hygiene
  • Genetics
  • Aging
  • Fluorosis

There are two main types of teeth stains – intrinsic and extrinsic. Extrinsic stains are caused by outside sources like foods or tobacco affecting the color of the enamel. We can remove most extrinsic stains with professional whitening solutions. Intrinsic stains, on the other hand, occur on the inside of the tooth. These stains are often caused by illness or medication. If your teeth have intrinsic stains, we may need to use another cosmetic treatment such as bonding or veneers to whiten them.

What Does the Whitening Procedure Involve?

We offer Opalescence take-home whitening products at Semans Family Dentistry. With this option, you can attain a brighter, more beautiful smile from the comfort of your home!

Unlike other over-the-counter products, Opalescence uses professional levels of peroxide – the chemical agent that whitens enamel. While most whitening solutions can dry out the enamel and cause tooth damage, Opalescence provides outstanding results without dehydrating or irritating your teeth. We prefer this product because it is safe, comfortable, and convenient to use.

How Do I Keep My Teeth from Staining?

The best way to keep your teeth from becoming stained is to visit your dentist twice a year, keep up with your daily hygiene routine, and avoid consuming too many stain-causing foods and drinks. Once your treatment has ended, we would be happy to recommend additional products that can keep your smile bright and beautiful between visits.
